Rodney Perea is a dedicated law enforcement professional with 17 years of experience committed to serving and protecting his community. Throughout his career, Rodney has earned a reputation for integrity, leadership, and a strong belief in proactive, community-based policing.
Rodney has experience across multiple agencies in the county including the following:
He began demonstrating leadership early in his career by founding and supervising the Enforcement Services Department for the Las Vegas Police Department. In this role, he oversaw animal control, code enforcement, and public service aides, creating a structured and efficient division focused on improving quality of life and community standards.
While serving with the San Miguel County Sheriff’s Office Rodney held the rank of Sergeant, for both civil and patrol divisions. During this time, he also served as Interim Undersheriff, taking on executive-level responsibilities and helping guide departmental operations, personnel management, and public safety initiatives.
In addition, Rodney played a key role in establishing the New Mexico Pecos Canyon State Parks, serving as Superintendent/Law Enforcement Officer. In this position, he developed and led park operations, enforced laws while ensuring the safety of visitors and protecting natural resources.
Rodney currently serves as a Patrol Officer with the Las Vegas Police Department, continuing to work directly with the community and respond to public safety needs daily.
With a career defined by leadership, innovation, and service at every level of law enforcement Rodney is committed to bringing experience, accountability, and strong leadership to the Office of Sheriff.
As a candidate for San Miguel County Sheriff, Rodney is focused on strengthening connections across all parts of the county — especially in the rural areas. With hopes to ensure that every resident feels seen, heard, and protected. He believes in a visible and approachable sheriff’s office that listens to the concerns of citizens and works in genuine partnership with the community.
Rodney is also a strong advocate for expanding School Resource Officer programs. He envisions officers serving not only as protectors but as mentors — helping to build trust, guide students toward positive choices, and create safer learning environments for our youth.
Animal welfare is another cornerstone of Rodney’s platform. He plans to revise animal control operations to emphasize humane care, public education, and access to resources, while maintaining firm and fair enforcement that encourages voluntary compliance.
Addressing drug-related crime and addiction is a priority for Rodney. He supports expanding narcotics enforcement efforts to combat illegal drug activity while also partnering with local organizations to connect struggling individuals and families with treatment opportunities, mental health support and rehabilitation resources — promoting recovery and reducing repeat offenses.
With nearly two decades of hands-on law enforcement experience and a deep commitment to community-based policing, Rodney Perea stands ready to lead a sheriff’s office that is responsive, compassionate, and effective — an office that truly serves every corner of San Miguel County.
